Your Day Master is the single character that represents you in a Saju chart — one of ten types built from the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in their yang and yin forms. When people ask "which Day Masters match?", they're really asking how two of these ten types interact.

The engine: five-element relationships between two people
Every pairing runs on the same logic. Take your element and their element, then ask how the two elements relate. There are five possible relationships, and each one has a distinct emotional signature.
The two cycles you need
Two simple cycles drive everything:
- Generating cycle (one element feeds the next): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Wood fuels Fire, Fire makes ash (Earth), Earth holds Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood.
- Controlling cycle (one element restrains another): Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. Wood breaks up Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood.
Place your two elements on these cycles and the relationship becomes obvious.
The five relationship types
Using your Day Master as the reference point:
- Same element — for example, two Wood people. These are peers (비겁): instant mutual understanding, shared instincts, easy rapport. The catch is competition — you want the same things and can butt heads over them.
- Their element generates yours (e.g., their Water → your Wood). They are resource / support (인성): nurturing and grounding. They pour into you, teach you, calm you. It often feels like being cared for.
- Your element generates theirs (e.g., your Wood → their Fire). This is output (식상): you energize and inspire them. You bring out their expression and drive; you feel creative and generous around them.
- Their element controls yours (e.g., their Metal → your Wood). This is authority / pressure (관성): challenge and growth. They push your edges, hold you to a standard, and can feel like stress — or like the discipline that makes you better.
- Your element controls theirs (e.g., your Wood → their Earth). This is wealth (재성): you feel you can "manage" or "handle" them. There's a sense of capability and reward, sometimes of responsibility.
None of these is good or bad on its own. "Pressure" can be exactly the growth someone needs; "support" can tip into dependence. The label describes the current's direction, not the outcome.
The magnetic pairs: classic Heavenly-Stem attraction
Alongside the element cycles, Saju tradition names five combining stem pairs (천간합) — Day Masters that are read as naturally drawn to each other, like two halves clicking together:

How to read any pairing yourself
You don't need a giant 10×10 grid. Use this three-step method:
1. Identify both elements. Find your Day Master's element and theirs (Wood/Fire/Earth/Metal/Water).
2. Locate them on the cycles. Ask: same element, who generates whom, who controls whom? That gives you the relationship type above.
3. Check for a magnetic pair. See if the two stems appear together in the table.
