從強格 (Following Strong Pattern) is a Following Pattern (從格) in which the entire chart is dominated by Resource (印星) and Companion (比劫) elements — the forces that strengthen and support the Day Master — to such an overwhelming degree that the chart must be read as "following the strong." Unlike most Following Patterns where the Day Master surrenders to an external force, in 從強格 the Day Master merges with the dominant energy flowing through Resource and Companion — becoming one with scholarly depth, independent strength, and the power of accumulated wisdom.

Formation Conditions

The Following Strong Pattern is one of the more unusual Following Patterns because it follows elements that strengthen the Day Master rather than overwhelm it from outside:

• Resource (印星 — both Direct and Indirect) and Companion (比劫 — both Rob Wealth and Peer) elements must dominate the chart overwhelmingly, appearing across month, year, hour pillars and their stems.


• The Day Master is extremely strong — not because it stands alone (as in 建祿格) but because it is embedded in a sea of supporting energy. The self is virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding Resource and Companion energy.


• External Ten Gods (Wealth, Officer, Output) must be absent or negligibly weak. If Wealth appears strongly, it disrupts the Resource (Wealth destroys Resource); if Officer appears strongly, it disrupts the balance. Output would drain the Day Master's energy outward.


• The "following" aspect means the Day Master rides along with the dominant current of Resource-Companion energy rather than asserting individual agency against it. The self becomes the scholar, the tradition, the accumulated knowledge itself.


• This pattern is sometimes confused with a simply strong chart. The distinction is that 從強格 requires overwhelming, near-exclusive dominance of Resource and Companion with no significant countering forces.

Favorable Gods (Yongsin) and Unfavorable Gods

Favorable (用神 / Beneficial Gods):

• Resource (印): The primary ruling energy. Anything that strengthens or supports Resource elements is favorable — the flow of learning, nourishment, and accumulated wisdom.


• Companion (比劫): Peers, colleagues, and the community of like-minded individuals who share the same elemental orientation. Group solidarity is a genuine strength.


• Output (食傷) in moderation as downstream release: Some Output to channel the accumulated internal energy outward into knowledge production, teaching, or creative work can be helpful — but it must not become strong enough to genuinely challenge the dominant pattern.

• Wealth (財): Wealth destroys Resource (財剋印), the primary source of the pattern's strength. Financial pressures, commercial demands, or material focus disrupt the academic-scholarly orientation fundamentally.


• Officer (官殺): Officers control Companion elements. When Officers appear, the peer group is restrained and the comfortable community of shared learning is disturbed.


• Strong Output that leads to Wealth: A chain of Output generating Wealth that becomes powerful enough to drain the dominant Resource energy disrupts the pattern.

• Profound scholarly depth: Following Strong individuals immerse themselves in knowledge with a completeness that goes beyond professional training. They become the field itself — its history, controversies, methods, and implicit values are absorbed into their identity.


• Intellectual self-sufficiency: Drawing on the richness of Resource energy (accumulated learning) and Companion energy (intellectual peers), they have an inner life of remarkable richness that does not depend on external validation or material reward.


• Principled independence: Their intellectual identity is not for sale. They will not compromise their understanding of truth for institutional convenience, financial incentive, or social pressure.


• Community of learning: The Companion dimension of this pattern means they form deep bonds with intellectual peers — study groups, research communities, philosophical traditions. These relationships are among the most sustaining in their lives.

Weaknesses

• Rigidity and resistance to change: The very depth of their identification with a particular body of knowledge makes paradigm shifts painful. They may defend established frameworks long after the evidence for change is clear.


• Stubbornness in the face of criticism: Intellectual stubbornness — defending positions with more energy than the evidence warrants because the position has become part of identity — is a characteristic weakness.


• Financial and practical disconnection: The structural conflict between Resource and Wealth means that financial matters are often neglected, poorly managed, or seen as beneath serious attention.


• Social narrowness: Deep immersion in a specialized field and peer community can produce an individual with little patience for those who do not share their depth of knowledge or commitment to rigor.
