Clear-Turbid (清濁) is one of the most refined ideas in Jeokcheonsu, the classic text on chart reading. It does not measure how lucky or unlucky a chart is. Instead, it asks a quieter question: does the chart hold together? A chart runs clear (清) when its forces flow toward one useful direction, and turbid (濁) when those forces conflict, obstruct, or scatter. Two people may share the same headline fortune, yet the texture of their lives can differ completely depending on whether their energy runs clear or muddy.
Clear (清) — A Chart That Knows Itself
A clear chart has a purpose it can serve. Its elements support one another instead of fighting, and the Yongsin—the pivot the chart relies on—stands out plainly and acts without obstruction. Nothing crucial is blocked, buried, or split in two. This is why the classics praise "一清到底" (clear all the way through) and "清得盡" (clarity carried to completion): the energy starts clean and stays clean from the day pillar out to the branches.

Clarity gives a life its throughline. Because the chart's direction is legible, effort compounds rather than cancels out.

A turbid chart is not a "bad" chart. The energy is there, but it has not yet found a single channel. People with muddy charts often feel they are working harder to reach the same place, precisely because part of their strength is spent resolving internal tension before it can point outward.

This is the point most easily missed. A clear chart of modest scale is not "small"—it simply knows itself, and a life that knows itself moves with unusual steadiness. Meanwhile a grand, resource-heavy chart can be genuinely muddy: powerful on paper, yet pulled in three directions at once, struggling to focus that power into a single, sustained result. Scale and clarity are different axes. The most enviable charts are often not the largest, but the ones whose energy is fully spent on one clear aim.
How Clarity Sits Beside Structure and Climate
Clear-Turbid does not replace the other pillars of chart reading—it completes them. Structure (格局) tells you what kind of chart you have and what it is built to do. Climate (調候)—the seasonal balance of heat and cold, dryness and moisture—tells you whether the chart is comfortable in its own season. Clear-Turbid then asks the final question: given that structure and that climate, do the pieces cooperate? A well-defined structure warmed by good climate but riddled with clashes can still read turbid; a plainer structure with everything pulling one way can read beautifully clear.

Turbidity is never a verdict. If even one clean thread can be traced through the murk—"clarity within turbidity"—it can carry a life to remarkable heights. And a single point of turbidity inside an otherwise clear chart, "turbidity within clarity" (清中有濁), is simply the reminder that no chart is finished being read. Every chart has a way to find its clarity. The work is coherence, not worth.
